Can Qoctor provide a letter to confirm an employee's medical condition(s) or medications, to give to their employer?

From time to time Qoctor has been asked to provide a letter for a person to give to their employer, stating medications they are taking, or listing their medical conditions.

Whilst Qoctor can provide medical certificates for sick leave/personal leave, we do not provide letters stating a person's medical issues or medications- instead, we would strongly encourage employees to discuss the matter with their usual GP or specialist.

It is important for employees to be aware that they are generally under no obligation to disclose specific personal health information to an employer.

However, an employee is required by law to tell their employer if a condition or treatment affects their ability to do their job, or if it will cause health and safety issues for others (for example, if it is unsafe for for them to handle machinery because they are taking medication that causes drowsiness).

Here are some helpful resources regarding decision-making when it comes to disclosing health information to your employer:

Deciding to tell others (headsup.org.au)

Talking to your employer about illness (healthdirect.gov.au)
