Further testing is not generally needed if BV symptoms get better following the prescribed course of antibiotics. However, if the symptoms have not cleared following treatment, then retesting may be advised, in case something else is causing the symptoms.

Follow-up testing may be recommended in pregnant women who have had BV, to ensure it has fully cleared after the antibiotic course. This is because BV in pregnancy can increase the risk of premature birth and low birthweight.
